Meehan Comments on Renewed Calls for Public Option

Lentz supports passage of government-run insurance option
July 30th

DREXEL HILL, PA - Pat Meehan, the Republican candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania's7th District, today released a statement on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's call for a public health insurance option. Reid recently told a group of liberal activists and bloggers that America is "going to have a public option. It's just a matter of when."

"I am deeply concerned about Senator Reid's comments promising a government-run insurance option," said Meehan. "A public option will cost the taxpayers billions of dollars and over time crowd out private insurance companies, leaving consumers with no choice but to sign up for a government plan."

Meehan also criticized his opponent, state legislator Byran Lentz, for his support of a public option. In a February 2010 interview with the Swarthmore Daily Gazette, Lentz expressed his preference for a health care law that included a public option.

"Representative Lentz's support for a public option places him squarely to the left of many members of his own party," said Meehan. "It's clear from Reid's comments that Washington liberals haven't given up their fight for a government insurance plan. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi don't need another rubber stamp for their agenda."

Meehan has laid out a series of specific proposals he believes would expand access to health care while cutting costs, including allowing consumers to buy insurance across state lines, allowing small businesses to pool together to pay lower insurance premiums, and enacting a series of tort reform measures that will protect doctors from frivolous lawsuits. Meehan's health care platform can be found here.
