Meehan Gains Seat on Transportation & Infrastructure Committee
Washington, DC– U.S. Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-PA/07) today announced he gained a seat on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and landed on three subcommittees with broad oversight of national transportation and infrastructure issues.
U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) appointed Meehan to the Subcommittee on Aviation; the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials; and the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management.
“With a major airport, a deep river port, a complex rail corridor, energy pipelines and communications infrastructure all embedded throughout the Delaware valley, Pat Meehan will bring a valued perspective to the committee work. As a former prosecutor, with an exemplary record of rooting out government fraud and abuse, Congressman Meehan will work to produce fiscally responsible legislation to improve our infrastructure, protect the taxpayers and create jobs,” Chairman Mica said.
The Subcommittee on Aviation oversees aviation safety and infrastructure and the programs of the Federal Aviation Administration, including NextGen air traffic control modernization. The Subcommittee also monitors the impacts of transportation security on aviation safety, the traveling public, and the industry. The Subcommittee is responsible for writing the next major multi-year authorization of the nation’s aviation infrastructure and safety programs and policies.
The Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials has jurisdiction over the economic and safety regulation of railroads and the agencies that administer those regulations. The Subcommittee also oversees federal passenger rail programs and Amtrak. The transportation of hazardous materials and pipeline safety also fall under the jurisdiction of the Subcommittee.
The Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management authorizes the nation’s emergency preparedness policy and programs and conducts oversight of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Subcommittee oversees agencies and programs promoting economic development in communities suffering economic distress, such as the Appalachian Regional Commission. The Subcommittee also exercises oversight of federal real estate programs and management.
