Pat Endorsed by the Delaware County Daily Times

October 29th

DREXEL HILL, PA - In case you missed it, the Delaware County Daily Times today announced its endorsement of Pat Meehan for Congress in Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District.  This comes just days after The Philadelphia Inquirer endorsed Meehan.  The Daily Times' endorsement states, in part:

Meehan, 55, of Drexel Hill, brings an equally impeccable resume to the race. He is a former Delaware County district attorney, and then U.S. Attorney for Eastern Pennsylvania. He earned a reputation as a law-and-order Republican, one who would go after white-collar corruption regardless of party affiliation.

He says the federal stimulus program was not necessarily the wrong idea, but instead that it was done the wrong way. He believes spending in Washington is out of control and debt continues to skyrocket, keeping any economic recovery at bay. He points to a lack of jobs created and pledges that "getting America back to work" will top his agenda. He also wants a long-term commitment to rebuilding infrastructure.

Both candidates have had issues with election petitions, which in turn have ratcheted up the rhetoric in what was already a white-hot race. It started with Meehan, and what appeared to be problems with invalid signatures on his nominating petitions.

To his credit, Meehan met the issue head-on, referring it immediately to the district attorney for review. It's now in the hands of the state attorney general. Even on the far end of the spectrum, it is not believed the faulty signatures posed any danger of knocking Meehan off the ballot.

Lentz's problem stemmed not from his own petitions, but rather those of Schneller. During a session with the Daily Times Editorial Board last week, Lentz finally admitted what many had suspected for months: His supporters helped gather the signatures that got Schneller on the ballot.

Lentz made it clear that no one recruited Schneller, that Schneller had already made the decision to make his third-party run. But it is equally clear Lentz did nothing to stop the process, in essence condoning it. And he let the issue simmer for months before coming clean....

Meehan has earned a reputation as a moderate, even at times with the price of criticism from his own party for not being conservative enough.

We are struck by his unquestioned integrity and desire to listen to all sides of an argument, then working toward a solution.

It is just that style of statesmanship and compromise we'd like to see him take with him to Washington.

In a close race between two good candidates, the Daily Times endorses Republican Pat Meehan in the race for the 7th Congressional District.
